Mogens Smed: Interior DCC Redefining Sustainability with Next-Gen Echo Tech Platform at Falkbuilt
Did you know that manufacturing and construction businesses affect the environment? Like, in a terrible way? Yes, you heard that right. I looked into it and uncovered some interesting information.
Construction companies work with different kinds of materials wherein half of the utilized products go to complete waste, ending up in bins and then landfills. This leads to air and land pollution.
Tumblr media
The equipment that is used in construction makes a lot of noise leading to noise pollution and disruptions for its neighbors. The smell that is in the air while using equipment and materials and the dust that is left behind after construction, can be quite hazardous and harmful to both the workers as well as to the environment and surroundings. Specifically, with a world that is running very short on our finite non-renewable resources, the quantity of water being used by these industries is in tons, and just imagine how much is being wasted!
Increasing pollution in the land, air, and water is affecting the Earth and its inhabitants. We as a people and the present generation, together, have started taking the necessary steps to reduce and move towards a zero-emission future for the sake of our dear planet. Quickly, innovatively, creatively, and sustainably!
With the advancements in technological tools and resources that are at our fingertips, many companies are leveraging tech and integrating several innovative ideas and tools into the core of their products and services. This is a great strategy for digital construction innovation, no doubt!
In the Manufacturing and Construction Industry, the conventional types of constructing, building, designing, manufacturing, and delivering are taken up a notch in the industry and market. So to speak, how fascinating is the idea of integrating a new generation of technology with the interior construction of buildings and spaces? Real cool right!? It’s indeed an efficient strategy that works well in resolving the rising challenges and global concerns in the industry.
So, come join us as we share deep insights into a sustainable interior design revolution with a Canadian company – Falkbuilt, co-founded by Mogens Smed, which has digitized interior construction for prefab, with a new process called DCC (Digital Component Construction) that is powered by the next-gen tech – Echo which is an agnostic, cloud-computing machine learning platform that uses Revit Model (Revise-Instantly).
Entrepreneur, Pioneer, Risk-Taker, and Deal-Breaker – The Face of Falkbuilt – Mogens Smed:
The co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Falkbuilt Ltd. is Mogens Smed. Mogens co-founded an interior Digital Component Construction -DCC (a process of integrating traditional construction methods with new technology) which is powered by an innovative technology called Echo – an agnostic, cloud-based, machine-learning platform for prefab from design through manufacturing to delivery and installation. This process and tech reduces and overcomes environmental and economic concerns in build, design, materials, freight, quality, time, and costs. The use of the Revit Model (Revise-Instantly), and Ensacpe and Inventor models, allows stakeholders to meet digitally and create, edit, and review a 3D model of the structure/space/building.
Residing in Calgary, Canada – Mogens Smed was the Chief Executive Officer at his father’s cabinetmaking company – SMED International, wherein for 15 years he shifted from furniture to modular interior construction, manufacturing, and full-height movable walls, access flooring, and modular furniture. He later again became a CEO at Evans Consoles.
In 2004, Mogens then co-founded and became CEO of DIRTT Environmental Solutions (DIRTT – Doing It Right This Time), where he pioneered digital modular sustainable solutions in construction alongside Barrie Loberg – the Vice President of Software Development. Thereafter in the year 2019, Mogens and Barrie co-founded Falkbuilt Ltd. – a prefab construction and manufacturer of digital components, and Echo – a construction tech cloud-computing platform to streamline the construction process efficiently and effectively. The company was established and its headquarters is located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Mogens’ accolades and accomplishments include – being named by Interiors and Sources Magazine as the Environmental Champion in 2004, the American Society of Interior Designers award for his efforts in mitigating construction wastes and making interiors sustainable and durable, and Ernst & Young awarded the EY Prairies’ Entrepreneur of Year – Clean-Tech in 2013.
About Falkbuilt:
Falkbuilt was co-founded by Mogens Smed and Barrie Loberg, in 2019, and is headquartered in Calgary, Alerta, Canada. The company is built on combining proven interior construction methods with next-generation interior construction tech – Echo, a cloud-computing software and platform, to build high-performing, sustainable, and cost-effective environments.
A digitized interior construction business, Falkbuilt adopts a construction method process of DCC – Digital Component Construction, where traditional construction methods are integrated and powered with innovative technology like Echo to create cost and time-effective structures/buildings/spaces that are high-performing, meet industry standards, and are environmentally friendly.
“Total clarity and predictability in design and cost with effective and timely scheduling of processes, the design, manufacturing, and delivery are enhanced to provide premium quality products that eliminate silos with Echo.” – Falkbuilt Ltd.
With sustainability initiatives and circular interior economy practices adopted at its core, Falkbuilt moves with a smaller carbon footprint, reduced factory waste, fewer materials, reduced freight, saving 2 tonnes of CO2 emission through the DCC process, fewer trades, less on-site waste productions, in-house manufacturing and innovation process, smarter design, durable finishing and delivery, designed for disassembly, saving costs and time, and the increased use of sustainable and recyclable materials.  Like everyone else in this generation, Falkbuilt aims and envisions a future where interior construction is better for the Earth as well as its inhabitants and hence promises to “provide the most responsive service the construction industry has ever seen”.

COVID-19: Calgary company builds ICUs, vaccination pods to ship around the world
COVID-19: Calgary company builds ICUs, vaccination pods to ship around the world
Pivoting during the COVID-19 pandemic is a matter of survival for so many Canadian companies, and for one Calgary business, the pivot is helping people around the world survive the pandemic. The people at Falkbuilt are old hands at turning out pre-made components to be assembled onsite for commercial clients. Since COVID-19 hit, they’ve been busy with more health-care projects, shipping kits that…

Meet the Real Estate Tech Entrepreneur: Mogens Smed from Falkbuilt
After a temporary pause in the Founder Interview Series, we’re back with another interview!
This week, we interviewed Mogens Smed from Falkbuilt.
Let’s go!
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Mogens Smed, CEO and co-founder of Falkbuilt, a technology company that is digitizing the conventional construction industry. Our solution, Digital Component Construction, is supported by our revolutionary technology, Echo, and an amazing team of Falkers (our 300+ employees) and our 85+ Factory-direct Branches across North America and around the world.
What problem does your product/service solve?
Digital Component Construction shortens the construction schedule, is far more sustainable than conventional construction and our prefab process requires far less labor onsite, something that is enormously helpful in a labor crunch. We use 30 percent fewer materials which is good for the planet, we have a very efficient and much smaller factory than other prefab manufacturers and Digital Component Construction is designed for disassembly, so digital components can be re-used until the end of their lifecycle. Our powerful, proprietary technology, Echo, provides a new, productive way for stakeholders—from their homes or offices anywhere in the world—to meet in the cloud, inside a Revit model, to discuss and make real time design changes.
What are you most excited about right now?
I am so excited to see the growth of our vision. We started this company two years ago and we have more than 85 Factory-direct Branches around the world bringing Digital Component Construction to their local markets. The market response is incredible.
What’s next for you?
I hope to start getting on the road more and visiting our Branches and clients across North America. Since the pandemic started, we’ve met hundreds of clients over 600 or 700 very effective Zoom tours of our factory. We take them through our Falkville, a showcase of our solutions and show the range of what we can do in healthcare, retail, commercial, education and industrial. We will keep doing the Zoom tours but I am also looking forward to meeting people face-to-face again.
What’s a cause you’re passionate about and why?
I am very passionate about the environment and our precious waterways. I am happy to support the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre on the Shuswap River in western Canada. It raises 50,000 Chinook salmon every year and offers educational programming to thousands of school children and visitors. I support the Pacific Salmon Foundation, which is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wild Pacific salmon and their natural habitats in British Columbia and the Yukon. And I am also a longtime supporter of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society dedicated to protecting and conserving all marine wildlife.
Thanks to Mogens for sharing his story. If you’d like to connect, find him on LinkedIn here.

As hospitals around the world scramble to make space to treat patients with COVID, two businesses have joined forces to present a solution.
Sprung Structures has been overwhelmed with calls this week.  Helping them in the process is Falkbuilt.
The companies have been working together for years.  Not only are the structures reliable, Avery said construction of a facility can take as little as weeks.
CEO Mogens Smed said the partnership with Sprung presents a proposition for hospitals as opposed to construction.
Falkbuilt currently has contracts around the world for units.  Avery said the contracts are mostly in North America.
Avery agrees the solution presents an opportunity for organizations to prepare for the haul despite the uncertainty ahead.

Mogens Smed out as DIRTT CEO following bitter management shakeup
Founder Mogens Smed is out at DIRTT Environmental Solutions Ltd. following a bitter management shakeup at the Calgary-based office construction company, while a new CEO has been appointed to the firm.
Smed, a well-known Calgary businessman, has served as executive chairman at DIRTT since agreeing to step down in January as CEO as part of a contentious reorganization. In a terse statement issued Monday, the company said Smed's departure was effective immediately.
“We acknowledge the enormous contribution Mogens has made since founding DIRTT, and this was a very difficult and carefully considered decision by the board,” newly appointed board chairman Steve Parry stated.

“However, Mogens has not adequately performed the agreed assigned duties, requiring the board to align management resources to begin building a more collaborative, adaptable and responsive team that creates the ability to successfully scale the business.”
DIRTT, which specializes in the design and manufacturing of prefabricated interior spaces, removed Smed from the CEO role and ousted president Scott Jenkins in January. The moves were questioned by shareholders at a testy annual general meeting in June that Smed called “embarrassing.”
Smed, 70, helped found DIRTT, or Doing It Right This Time, in 2004. The company went public in 2013. https://constructionlinks.ca/news/mogens-smed-dirtt-ceo-following-bitter-management-shakeup/ Established in 2003, Construction Links Network is a peer-to-peer network sharing platform for the construction, building and design community.
